The Annual South Downs Way Walk is certainly the simplest way of completing the whole trail. The event was first run in 1980 and is now celebrating its 43rd year!
The trail takes place during nine days in June. Luxury coaches are provided each morning at pick-up points along the south coast to take walkers to the start of each section of the 100-mile trail. At the end of the day, after a walk of 11 miles or so, the coaches return to all the pick-up points. No accommodation is provided; people return home or arrange a B&B near the coach point.
Over a hundred people take part every year but this is not a ‘guided’ walk and everyone is free to walk at their own pace. The coaches allow for this by leaving at different times throughout the afternoon. Lots of things happen along the way with pubs, farms and churches opening specially to meet us and there are competitions every day. At the end of the nine days, there is a sit-down buffet with prizes, certificates, and badges being handed out.
This is a hugely popular and fun event with many new and lasting friendships being made along the way. With an experienced team walking with you every day this is by far the simplest, safest, and most enjoyable way on completing this beautiful National Trail.
